tortuganónima - Imago LP (LeRockPsicophonique, 2019)

Dice la leyenda que Jorge Luis Borges era un gran admirador de los Rolling Stones y Pink Floyd, y que incluso escuchaba The Wall en cada uno de sus cumpleaños… Nunca sabremos qué le parecería un disco como el que nos ocupa hoy, que lleva “Aleph” y “Tlön” (y “Joseph K”!) como nombres para joyitas del post rock y math rock tan intrincadas como cuentos del maestro, pero confiamos en que su voto sería positivo; ¿cómo no admirar semejante trabajo? Más allá de las referencias literarias, el último lanzamiento del cuarteto oriundo de Santiago es una muy buena muestra de aquello que les ha ganado su invitación al ArcTanGent 2020 (reprogramado para 2021) - riffs en ritmos que esquivan el 4/4 (“Ukiyo”, “Utopiario”, “Magnolias”), instrumentación variada y atinadísima (“Espejos Dorados”, “Imago”), y climas que oscilan entre el math rock y el prog más clásico - el aún melódico. Como si fuera poco con lo anterior, han sumado voces a la hip hop (“Penumbra”), un equipo de músicos invitados de primer nivel, y otro de realizadores que retrataron la experiencia de grabación del LP en un excelente documental de veinte minutos que recientemente apareció en YouTube bajo el título de “tortuganónima: Making of Imago”. Sorprende la extensión del disco (cincuenta y dos minutos) y lo alto que han dejado la vara todo a lo largo de él, aun siendo esta su cuarta placa. Es una agradable noticia que, tal como me dijeron en 2018, tortuganónima siga reinventando el math rock a nivel sudamericano.

Legend has it that Jorge Luis Borges was a great admirer of the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd, and that he even listened to The Wall on each of his birthdays… We will never know what he would think of an album like the one that we're on today, in which post rock/math rock masterpieces as intrincate as Borges' stories carry names like “Aleph” and "Tlön" (and "Joseph K"!), but we are confident that his vote would be positive; How can you not admire such work? Beyond the literary references, the latest release by this Santiago based four piece is a very good example of what has earned them their invitation to ArcTanGent 2020 (rescheduled for 2021) - intricate riffs that dwell in everything-but-4/4 rythms (“Ukiyo”, “Utopiario”, “Magnolias”), varied and accurate instrumentation (“Espejos Dorados”, “Imago”), and atmospheres that oscillate between math rock and the most classic prog (the one that's still melodic). As if this wasn't enough, they have added full hip hop vocals (“Penumbra”), a lineup of top-tier guest musicians, and a team of filmmakers who portrayed the experience of the recording in an excellent twenty minute long documentary that has recently appeared on YouTube under the name "tortuganónima: Making of Imago". It amazes me how high they have set the bar on such a lengthy record (fifty two minutes), specially considering this is its fourth release. It is a pleasant surprise that, as I was told in 2018, tortuganónima continues to reinvent math rock at aSouth American level.

Au-delà des références littéraires, la dernière sortie de ce quatuor de Santiago est un très bon exemple de ce qui les a gagné leur invitation à ArcTanGent 2020 (reprogrammé au 2021) - des riffs complexes hors des rythmes 4/4 ("Ukiyo »,« Utopiario »,« Magnolias »), une instrumentation variée et précise (« Espejos Dorados »,« Imago »), et des ambiances qui oscillent entre le math rock et le prog le plus classique (celui qui reste mélodique). Comme si cela ne suffisait pas, ils ont ajouté des voix hip hop ("Penumbra"), une gamme de musiciens invités de premier rang, et une équipe de réalisateurs qui ont décrit l'expérience de l'enregistrement dans un excellent documentaire de vingt minutes qui a eté récemment publié sur YouTube sous le nom "tortuganónima: Making of Imago". Je suis étonné de voir à quel haute point ils ont placé la barre avec un LP aussi long (cinquante-deux minutes), d'autant plus qu'il s'agit de sa quatrième sortie. C'est une agréable surprise que, comme on me l'a dit en 2018, tortuganónima continue de réinventer le math rock au niveau sud-américain.
